ANYWAY. Thor. Yes this isn't my first stab at Thor, but it was Scott's Choice. I'm pretty happy with this one. I removed the winged helmet because to be honest, done that already. So yeah, I'm pleased with it overall.

Versus 9 - Marshall Law

What we have here... is a failure to communicate.

So I'm gonna let you into the behind the scenes process of how Versus is done. My good pal Scott Hume and I pick a character and then we both draw that character in our own styles. It's timed and it takes approximately 45 minutes for us to do the drawings. We take turns picking the subject of the versus as well. Last week was my choice, so that left this week's choice to Scott. Now Scott and I don't see each other's Drawings until they're finished, Scott usually not seeing mine until I post them here. Well with a world of pop culture with many characters with similar names it was bound to happen. Scott picked "Marshall Law" as this week's topic.

So I drew Marshall Law.

And Scott, he drew Marshall Law.

Two totally different characters with the exact same name. When I opened the e-mail from Scott all I could do was laugh. I wonder what he'll have to say when he sees this.

As for my drawing I'm pretty happy with it. I finished the basic body pretty fast so with the extra time I went back and drew the Dragon background which looks pretty good. I can't really compare it to Scott's though hahaha. Back to my choice. Let's see if I can pick something we'll be on the same page about!

All together now: "FINALLY". This is the first TRUE 30 minutes of Fury to be posted since March. and again, it's another request. The request was "Jesus playing guitar riding a bomb shaped like the cross". Pretty self explanitory. For the most part, no problems. The falling lines did work out exactly as I planned though. Overall, pretty happy with this one.

Versus 7 - Darth Maul

And it's another Versus! Today's topic Darth Maul. I liked how this one turned out but again, it comes down to timing for this one. The face and the tattoos was what took up the most time I think. I had skteched out the other arm and the rest of te lightsaber. One thing I have now added to my artistic arsenal is a new pen that allows me to draw white lines. Pretty much all the white on the black suit was done with it, and I love how it looks. Expect me to use it a lot in the future.

WOW! Was this one ever a challenge. It was my choice too. There's a damn good reason there's not colour in this one, and it boils down to detail and time. There's so much to Galactus I just didn't have a chance to even try to colour it. Also, there was supposed to be stars on the black, it wasn't supposed to be just a solid black bg. That big white empty space was supposed to contain a clenched Galactus fist. Once again, Time. Keep in mind these are timd battles, 45minutes for both of us. Scott had it right to include as little detail as possible on his helmet.

*Ahem* Sorry bout that... I was channeling the Stallone movie there. Anyway another battle has been waged between myself and Scott, and this time it was over Judge Dredd from the 2000 a.d. Comic. I really liked this one I must say. Even the colours look decent ooutsife of a few mistakes I made on the helmet. Something I missed in my drawing that Scott's has is the lightning bolt pattern of the shine. It shows up in every picture I used for reference so I don't know how I missed it. But whatever. Otherwise it's a good pic. Just ignore that I got lazy and made the gun solid black out of laz... That is to say, out of lack of timing.

So I've decided to start doing this new thing. I have a huge pile of old business cards I can't use so i've decided to start drawing on the back of them. It doesn't take particularly long to do. For example, this quick Wolverine close up took five minutes to throw together:

Long time no see! It's been a while since I've updated this blog. I was going at quite a kick for a while there but I took some time off the blog to focus on my comic. I'm not done with the comic, far from it in fact, but I had a hankering to do something besides Mike, Hannah, and the rest of the crew. So I turn to you fair reader for ideas. 30 minutes of Fury is now all request. I'll post when I find the time. I'll be the final judge of whether I want to draw something or not. In other words requests like "draw a giant cock monster" probably won't be honoured. Not to say I'm a prude or anything. Just be reasonable. Today's request is such an example.

"A unicorn making love to a Keebler elf"

Since it's not the most work safe image I've hidden it. All you need to do is click here to see it. I had a lot of trouble with the Keebler Elf's face for some reason. Surprisingly the Unicorn was relatively easy which was nice since usually horses are not something I draw well. And before you give me shit about the Unicorn's position, eff off. It's a drawing of a unicorn having sex with a corporate logo. I think I'm allowed to take liberties.

Also just a note when requesting stuff in the future. Just things like "spider-man" or things like that are okay. and uh keep it to something I can draw in half an hour too. I mean like "robot t-rexes fighting an army of sailors with pom poms" or something like that may sound cool, but realistically I'm not gonna be able to pull that off. Just saying.

Okay that was mature :P Anyway, today's pic is Altair from Assassin's Creed. Oveall I like it, but i think the head's a little too big. It might be the hood. Otherwise I like it okay. The Hidden blade should be a little bigger I think. Also the waist belt has a lot more detail it really needs. I think I've learned by now detail and time limits don't mix.

Well Vegeta's most distinguihing feature is his hair. So I kind of had to include that. I also put some pieces of Sayian Armour in there. Make it more patch worky. Yes it's been a while since I posted. Why? Well I was pretty sick for a while and while sick, I was trying to rest as much as I could to get better as quickly as possible. I wanted to be well for my vacation to the Bahamas. Which I got back from Yesterday actually. So 'm back at it. First up! Scott Pilgrim! AWESOME! My first complaint right off the bat is he background. I should have known better than to attempt the bg that was just lines without a ruler. Looks TERRIBLE. Scott Himself I'm a little confused by. I want to like it more than I do. There's just something that offputs it for me. It's between the Hands and the foreshortening. Oh well.

Eileen Galvin from Silent Hill 4. If by chance you think Eileen here looks familiar she should. Eileen was the inspiration for the look of Hannah back in her earlier appearances. I actually made Hannah's Middle name "Eileen" in honor of this inspiration. So how did I attempt to change Eileen up so that I wasn't just drawing Hannah a characte I draw all the time? well, Eileen has these light green eyes which I tried to emphasize. The lightness anyway, not the green. Eileen shows up in the story in this dress because she was on the way to a party when she got sucked into the silent hill world. I tried to make her a little worse for wear like she'd been there a while. There's something not quite right with the proportions though. Either the head's too large, or the torso needs to be a little longer. Or maybe both.

Chloe Frazer from Uncharted 2. Mixed fellings about this one. In the game she has unnaturally light eyes for someone with skin and hair as dark as hers. I think I got that to translate here which probably is why something about this drawing irks me. It's almost unsettling. Proportions are fine. Despite the laziness of the gun the left hand looks fine. Right hand is ugh. I dunno. I can't say if I like it or hate it. It's just kind of there. Maybe because yesterday was so awesome.

Anyway, The dude has a very badly scarred (or burned, it's never explained) I think it came off very well in the drawing. Even in the way there's only a partial eyebrow. Rather than do the black box thing I tried to do something a little different and draw like... Aztecish things. Using my whiteout pen I did that, and well... mixed results. It would look great if the pen hadn't oozed crappily or clogged up. I need better materials. Ah well.

Uncharted Week! pt 1

God do I love Uncharted 2. It's so well written and the characters are so likable that I just had to hit a character from it. I couldn't decide who though. I had a request for Nathan Drake, but I just did him recently. While that drawing was okay, I was more happy with the skeleton in the background than with Drake himself. So as I was going throughout the list of characters I couldn't tell who I wanted to do more. So Screw it! I'm gonna do them all.
First up, Elena Fisher. One of the few returning characters from the first this is her in her journalist outfit from the second game. Overall, it's not bad. But there's something wrong with the face. The eyes are a little too far apart or the nose is too stubby. One or the the other. Or both even. I also screwed up the one hand that did get inked a bit. But unless you're new to seeing these things you know hands aren't my forte. But this is. Okay that was lame.

VERSUS - 3 - Adam Strange

Another Versus between myself and Mr. Scott Hume. This one was is choice, Adam Strange. I admit I wasn't 100% familiar with the character. I knew he was a DC character and he was like he "space opera" guy. There's a lot of different versions of him, and I went with one of the more modern takes. Not bad. I Got a good chunk of use out of my White out pen on the star field. I actually like that most of all. I tried to add this shine to his costume that I don't think I accomplished very well. Also, my jetpack flames suck balls. I ran out of room on the bottom of the page, and rather than do the smart thing and just kind of let his legs trail off into space I drew them there. All stubby like. Nice job me.

A Cold One

Arthas, the Lich King from World of Warcraft (per James' Request). The Helmet came out pretty good. The rest of it is pretty meh. I should have known though. Drawing something in half an hour that's as detailed as this. So I'm missing a couple of skulls. Like 12. It's not too bad. but It could have had more. Still. Helmet = Coolness.

While not badly drawn at all It's a very boring pose. There's a few mistakes if you look at it. Like part of the face isn't symmetrical at all. Also, the thin lines on the chest plate were crapped up. I was trying to draw them thin, and I just ended up having to draw over it more than once. Once again, the black cube. Makes it pop I'm telling you. Murder on the Sharpies though :P

Pretty pleased with this Victor Von Doom. My only really problem I have with it is I put too much shadow on the bottom of the Jaw. He has kind of a Ventriloquist dummy thing going for him. I did that box thing in the back. It seems to make the image pop more I dunno why. I spent a lot of time on te mask. That's why there is only the shoulders and head... of Doom!

Well, I think I know the whole problem with that is My blue lead ran out and I didn't have a chance to draw it before it was inked. That's why it sucked. Boo urns for that. Leon From Resident Evil 2. Personally I hate what they did with this character of the years. They made him so emo it's not even funny. His first appearance in RE 2 I still think was the best one. It was originally an entirely different hand that looked like shit and I ended up erasing that hand and drawing a new one. While better than the first hand it was rushed and it shows.

The Hunt Continues

And we have part two of the Predator. It's not a full on final one, I probably won't do a part 3, but its a lot further along. There's quite a few changes made to it if you really pay attention to the first one. there's some new shading and some new details. The pole's kinda mismatched. I shoulda used a ruler. Something I did add to this was I put in kind of a shade for the skin. Like the Predator has a skin colouring that I added. Or Skribbled on.

Versus - 2 - Soviet Batman

Ah Soviet Batman from Superman Red Son. This one was another Versus with my Buddy Scott. Since I never really explained the first Versus, here's the plan: Scott Hume (site) and I pick a theme and in our own styles pop out a sketch. Whereas I usually just do Black and white, Scott's take is more colorful and has some water color work to it. So It's a nice comparison. There's a few differences to it as well in just the formatics. Since scott works with a lot of wet wet wet things the time limit is upped. This one he actually went 50 minutes on, but on the Goblin we went 45.

Now for art analysis. I wanted to put some colour into this, but I never got out to an art store to buy the necessary tools. Ah well. Not exactly a lot to this on, I figured in 5 minutes I would have had more done but I had to go back at one point and redraw an arm pre-inking. Because of the blue pencil you can't tell, but trust me, I did it. His torso's pretty wide. Maybe I shoulda called him Fatman! ha ha ha lame. Pleased most of all with the face. This Batman is a villain and I think I got the mischeivous grin I was going for.

The head looks good. Proportions are okay. Though I should have done something more than just solid black for the torso (although it made it quicker to do) likeness wise I'd say I did decently. If I didn't tell you who it was would you know?

Ah Generic X Lady. I was SO distraught over yesterday's utter destruction of the female form. This was kind of an attempt to fix that. First off, head's too big. I reached a point and I realized I had just drawn a nude girl with no nipples. So I slapped an old school X-men uniform on her. We'll say it's Kitty. The head though, throws the whole thing out of whack. What the hell happened? I was on such a role there.

I wasn't exactly that pleased with the head shot Magneto, and I wasn't having the best of luck with headshots since the first Snake a little while back so I went back to a body sho. Wow should I have stuck to head shots. This little number is Regina from Dino Crisis. She's looking up over er shoulder because she was supposed to be looking at a dinosaur I popped in later but eff that. I don't like this at all. I screwed up the hair, I screwed up the eyes, and the posture is atrocious. The complete hand is the only saving grace of this pic since it's not a full on beef meister hand. Fail all around.

I did this in 30 minutes? Hmm. Anyway, the first pic on this blog way back when was of Magneto, and since I've been revisiting things a lot. So not too bad. I spent a lot of time in the sketching department. That's why what YOU see is so little. The blue pencil you don't see there was quite a bit. The helmet shape took a lot time surprisingly. Shading was okay I guess.

Where's part two of Megalomaniacon Well I misplaced the drawing, so another time for that one i guess. So Gordon Freeman from Half Life. I quite like this one. The only thing I hate was that I had a shower and it dripped down onto the pic. Bottom left. I ran out of time, the suit was going to feature a lot more scratches and stuff which is why the circle around the symbol is kind of distorted. It was supposed to look like it ad flaked off a bit. It probably would've looked a little better of I hadn't put the stubble on, but otherwise quite happy. Eyes and nose look pretty nice.

I don't know if you can classify this one as a repeat or not? I've done Venom before, but this, this is Anti Venom, or "White Venom" as someone called him in a comic one. Anti Venom is Eddie Brock (my favorite Venom) with a different, self produced healing symbiote. The way it's explained in the comic works better than how I just made it sound. Trust me. Onto the Drawing! Not too bad. The Face looks bad ass, but otherwise it's just a generic muscle guy. The hand was added last, and it's obvious. I had three minutes left. I just should have doodles in the background.

Wow. All I can say is I am very very happy with this. This may actually be my favorite drawing since I started 30MOF. Not the first time I've taken a crack at a character from the game Heavenly Sword, but this Nariko has a MUCH better result than the last one. I really like this drawing. My only real regret was that I wasn't able to do some of the ornate designs on the metal armor parts. I didn't really have time. No hands was actually a decision I made along the way. I was so happy with how the rest of the drawing was I didn't want to screw it up with those meat hooks I usually drop on my characters intentionally. I was going to draw the sword in the picture too, but didn't include it for the reason I didn't do the detailing on the metal. and hey, lips look good on this one too! All and all, VERY happy. Drawings like this one actually drive me onwards! LET'S KEEP GOING!

Ah the Punisher. I will admit I used some visual reference from the box of the new punisher film's DVD case for the lighting on the face, but hey, It looks okay. An earlier verson actually had a bit of the eyes poking through the darkness which you can see very easily if you go to the zoom. In the end I just decided to go all shaded. It looked... well... off. Had I not ran out of time there'd have been a lot more shading on the rest of the body. But I did, so there's not. Otherwise not too bad I think.

So I did a part two. Like the last Part 2 I did, it wasn't a full 30 minutes. I did closer to 27 minutes, but who's counting? So you can see I added quite a bit. THe Claw turned out pretty good, but I made the hand too long I guess. like it look unnaturally long. Even for a mutant turtle. No that it's done it looks like the shoulders are a little too large. The slashes in the background were kind of a last minute addition, but since I had the time to do the shading they fit and seem less like a throw away bit.

I love Turtles in Time. I remember playing in arcades and loving it and I remember renting it years ago on Super Nintendo when I was younger. And when I went on my old school gaming craze a while back I had a copy of it shipped from Texas. You can see, I love that game. So when the HD remake hit PS3 like two weeks ago, I hit it up like crazy. But there was some changes from what I played on the Super Nintendo. Like the omission of my favorite boss, Slash the evil ninja turtle! In tribute I drew him here. I'm gonna part two this one because really, I did a head and shoulder in thirty minutes. There's of course the rest of the drawing which you can't see of course because of the blue pencil. But there was a lot of care put into it. that's why it took so long. Like I said, expect a part 2.

Also, i did some research later and found out, the HD remake mirrors the arcade version. The level I love that's gone and the boss I love thats gone? Only in the Super NES version. Weird.

Ah Jill Valentine from Resident Evil one. I always loved that character and that design. Dunno why. I always played Jill whilst I played RE1 sooooo kabam! Drawing. I ran out of time at the end so there's no right arm past the elbow. Also, I didn't finish the pants, but there was only like another inch of leg not there. I tried to do the lipstick thing again, but it didn't work out very well. Thus if you look, no lipstick, but if you look at the blue pencil it's kinda there. Overall. Very happy with this one. even without the arm.

Remember back when I said I was going to do Ghost rider and then did Red skull instead for that lighting experiment? Well I still had a jonesing for some Ghost Rider action and Bam! There he is. Ah Ranma. I've been reading a ton of my old Ranma 1/2 comics and felt inspired to draw female Ranma. For those uninitiated with Ranma 1/2, Ranma the male main character of the story turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, and hot water turns him back to normal. I didn't do the lipstick thing I've been trying with my female characters lately because Well Ranma in most cases doesn't play up his femininity and dresses as he would as a male and doesn't hit up make up or anything like that. Overall I'm pretty pleased with this one. The right fist is kindacrap, but the left hand isn't one of those meaty mitts I'm known for doing. Hoo rah!

Part of the reason there is no inked arm in the drawing is because I was never really happy with how it looked. I went back to it several times trying to fix it. you can't see any of that though. But hey, that's why I buy blue pencils. Because they don't show up. I was really happy with how the face turned out though. The whole head actually. Yay! Rest of it? Meh. Optimus Prime! Kind of a weird Hybrid Optimus. and I don't mean that in an "electric car" sort of way. The face is pretty much the 80s cartoon face. I was watching season one a lot at the time of the drawing. But on my shelf is a "classic" style Optimus. That's what i used as the body reference. I used part of the face design in my Optimus as well. I still think James said it best in what's wrong with this one. Head's too big. Not ridiculous, but enough that it makes the body look to small.

Not often do I get to bust out the swastika in a sketch but there it is. The whole point of this drawing was more a light study than the importance of any actual drawing. I was going to do a face, but figured that might be too hard. So I figured a skull would be much easier. Less details to work around. This was actually going to be Ghost rider at first, but I thought about it and well, it's not easy to do a light study on the skull when the skull itself is the light source. Thus it became the Red Skull from Captain America comics. It seems okay to me. the drawing which was completed in about ten minutes is actually not too bad at all but the shadows which were the point took up the remaining 20. I dunno. Without a photo of a skull shaded from the same direction I don't really know how accurate this was. Hmmm

Lunchbox? No way! Yes way! Character wise, yes this looks like Silent Bob, likeness wise? not really. But then Kevin Smith is pretty easy to draw. Beard plus hat, plus stocky guy. done. Hands are pretty meaty though. I also used the dying marker again. And there was a mistake I made with the eyes. Originally there was a shine to the eyes. I screwed up the comparative sizes and one was too big. as I tried to fix it I just kept making it worse. Eventually there was no shine, and I was left with a Silent bob from "Uncanny Valley" (look it up).

Actually that Title makes me think more of He-Man than Skeletor, but what the hey, it works. Once again you can see I had the same "marker running out of life" problem I had with Darth Vader, but what the hey, it works for the background. I went for more of the recent relaunch style of Skeletor than classic 80s style, but it works regardless. I spent too much time doing the background shading. there's a lot of shading I wanted to do on the cape and chest and just plain ran outta time.

And in case you were counting, Skeletor has a weird number of teeth. I didn't even try to do it right. Meh.

Today's Pic, Darth Vader! Now something that was different about this one was I tried to draw it with ZERO visual reference. How did I do? Judge for yourself. Personally, I 'd say not too bad all things considering. There's some weirdness in the mask but it doesn't kill the drawing. you can still tell who it is. Once again I took a character who's all black and that was again a mistake. As you can see I tried to use a grey marker to do the shading which would've been a good idea if not for three things. One, It's too light a grey. Two, the marker was dying. Three, I was just about out of time when I started doing that. So now I have this big oddly grey headed Vader. Oh well. Not a bad effort.

X-23, the female clone of Wolverine. Yes I know, I did wolverine yesterday. Must have him on the brain I guess. Not too bad. More or less it's the two drawings from the days before! There's the shininess of the black Psylocke costume and the continuing lip experiment (little too full this time maybe). Proportions are okay, Hands could definitely use some work, but then hands have always been a weakness of mine. The most amazing thing about this drawing is that I only did it in Twenty minutes. What was I doing for the first ten? This:
There was no way I could continue with this one. Posture is F'ed. Face is F'ed/ Hair is F'ed. I tried to save it. Didn't go well. With 20 mins to go, I flipped the page and started over again. Much better result.

Psylocke from the X-men. I am very happy with this one. Why? LIPS. Normally I shy away from them because I always screw them up. Since the whole point of this blog is a practice thing i decided to throw them in. Apparently I need some new sharpies as you can see where I started to run out of ink. Also I waited too long into the drawing to do the chest portion (ie: boobs) of the pic. you can see I didn't quite finish in time. Also I wasn't really sure how the shading on the chest (again: boobs)should go. That's why i ended up with this um... shiny corset looking thing. Otherwise, I was quite pleased over all. She could be more Asian though...

If you look carefully you can still see the construction lines that made up the original right arm which had the Psychic Knife she's so popular for having. I decided it was too busy with both the knife and the "butterfly" thing she does with her psychic powers. That and the arm looked like ass.

Today's hit is Nathan Drake from Uncharted. He's in Uncharted 1 costume, thus the "fortunate" title (Because Uncharted 1 is called "drake's fortune". Get it? Okay I know. you don't care.)

So how do I Rate this drawing? Decent. Honestly it could be any generic guy in a tomb. there's nothing really obvious that makes it stand out as Drake. And what's with the hand holding the shotgun? Count the fingers. Either I was drunk or forgot to erase construction lines. Actually my favorite part of this drawing is the skeletal conquistador leaning on the chest. This pic looks overall much better in person. I guess I went a little too light with the pencil. You can barely see coins in the chest. Or the chest itself. Oh well.

30 Minutes of Returning

Hello all. It's been over a year since I've posted anything on this blog. Why? Don't know. I keep meaning to return to it, and I just never do. Currently, I'm at a standstill in my webcomic. It's nearing it's climax and I'm having troubles with making it happen the way I want. So while I'm in writing block, I wanted to make sure I kept my drawing skills sharp, since normally after a large break I "fall off the wagon" as it were and turn out some crap. So to keep things sharp, I've started this thing again, and linked it to my Facebook account so that I can get some feedback going on. That said, I am also taking SUGGESTIONS with the facebooking. I'm not saying that I'm going to take all of them (to be honest someone's gonna pick something that'll need way more than 30 mins eventually).

To get this ball rolling, Our first drawing is (drumroll please)

Shredder from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Not too bad for a first foray back the thirty minutes arena. There's a few likes and dislikes though. The whole shoulders and helmet I really like. The shine on the helmet never really got incorporated into much else of the drawing past the one shoulder pad. Overall artistically I like the drawing, but proportionately what a mess. The legs are way too small in comparison with the rest of the body. You can also tell by the spikes on them and the fact that there's shading mistakes everywhere I was trying to hurry at the end of the drawing. Also the unfinished shading on the cape pretty much tells you where I was when I ran out of time.

So that's the new start of this blog. Sorry it took so long to do. I've had (and am continuing to have) scanner troubles over the last week. Apparently he version of vista I use doesn't support it. Awesome. Anyway, I'm doing some scanning on my mom's computer in the meantime. a final not though, I HAVE NEVER KEPT THIS BLOG GOING FOR MORE THAN 5 DAYS IN A ROW.

Let's see if I can break that record. See you tomorrow.
